Patrolman Otto Mosholder | End of Watch: 12/10/1936

Otto Mosholder was assisting another officer who was investigating the actions of two suspicious persons. Unknown to the officers, these males were armed and without warning fired their weapons at both officers. Mosholder was struck and later died from his gunshot wounds.

Patrolman William J. Greller | End of Watch: 9/18/64

William Greller and his partner were responding to what they though was a routine call of a theft, but in reality it was a robbery in progress. Greller was shot at point blank range and died from his wounds. His partner was also wounded but was able to return fire and kill the suspect. The officer recovered from his wounds.

Patrolman Frank Humr | End of Watch: 10/29/1965

Frank Humr was assigned to the motorcycle unit and on routine patrol when he began pursuing a speeding motorist and his motorcycle was suddenly struck by another vehicle. Humr died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Patrolman Louis Golonka | End of Watch: 7/23/1968
Louis Golonka was murdered by militants who had staged an elaborate plan, designed to kill police officers by ambush. He sustained several shotgun blasts to his chest while attempting to assist fellow officers who were under a heavy gunfire attack that night.

Patrolman John L. Hubbell | End of Watch: 6/4/1979

John Hubbell and his partner were arresting a robbery suspect at his home when the suspect suddenly produced a weapon and fired at both officers. Both officers returned fire striking the assailant, but Hubbell was wounded and later died from his wounds. His partner, who was also wounded, recovered.

Patrol Officer Desmond Sherry | End of Watch: 7/3/1980

Desmond Sherry was off duty and driving home when he saw a street robbery in progress. He stopped his car to help but was immediately shot in the face by one of the suspects. Sherry died from his wounds.

Patrol Officer Stephen M. Kovach | End of Watch: 3/11/1984

Kovach and his partner became involved in the pursuit of a motor vehicle being driven by an armed and dangerous suspect, who had just committed several robberies. Upon stopping the vehicle they exchanged gunfire with the suspect, killing him. Kovach was shot twice and killed. His wounded partner later recovered.

Patrol Officer Ernest C. Holbert | End of Watch: 10/25/1987

On 1/2/1972, Holbert and his partner were investigating a motor vehicle accident. The operator of one of the vehicles suddenly produced a weapon and fired several times striking both Holbert and his partner, who returned fire and killed the suspect. His partner recovered but Holbert went through four major brain operations. He finally succumbed, in October of 1987.

Detective Robert J. Clark | End of Watch: 7/1/1998

Vice Unit Detective Robert Clark and several other officers were on patrol when they observed a drug transaction and pursued the suspect into the stairway of a building, where a struggle ensued. Clark and his partner were pushed down the stairway and fired upon by the suspect. Clark died as a result of the gunshot wounds he sustained.

Patrol Officer Wayne Leon | End of Watch: 6/25/2000

Leon was on routine patrol when he observed a motorist commit a traffic violation. He stopped the vehicle and both men excited their automobiles. Leon confronted the driver on the lot of a gas station and asked him for identification. The suspect produced a weapon and shot Leon point blank in the face. Leon died as a result of his wounds.

Detective John Schroeder | End of Watch: 8/31/2006

Jonathan Schroeder was shot and killed while he and fellow officers served a warrant on a man wanted for rape and burglary on West 98th street. The assailant opened fire, striking Schroeder in the shoulder area not protected by his vest. Schroeder was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds shortly after midnight.

Sergeant Martin Arnold Stanton | End of Watch: 9/27/2010

Sergeant Martin Stanton tragically suffered a fatal heart attack on September 27th, 2010, after engaging in two foot pursuits. The first pursuit followed a traffic stop where he apprehended subjects, and the second occurred when he chased a man tampering with vehicles on Montrose Avenue. Despite his efforts, he was unable to catch the second suspect. Sergeant Stanton, who had served the Cleveland Police Department for 16 years, passed away at home, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Trooper Kenneth V. Velez | End of Watch: 9/15/2016

Trooper Kenneth Velez was struck and killed by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on I-90, near the Warren Road exit, in Cuyahoga County. Trooper Velez had served with the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Police Officer David J. Fahey | End of Watch: 1/24/2017

Police Officer David Fahey was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on I-90, near Warren Road, while assisting at the scene of a fatal accident at approximately 6:00 am. He was setting out flares to divert traffic off of the highway when he was struck by an oncoming car. The vehicle fled after striking him. The driver was arrested later in the day. Officer Fahey was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Cleveland Police Department for 2-1/2 years.

Police Officer Vu X. Nguyen | End of Watch: 7/06/2018

Police Officer Vu Nguyen, a dedicated member of the Cleveland Division of Police for over 20 years, tragically passed away on July 6th, 2018. He collapsed during a physically demanding run as part of the agency’s canine handler eligibility process, conducted in challenging 90+ degree heat on July 2nd, 2018. Despite immediate medical attention, Officer Nguyen’s condition deteriorated, and he was flown to Cleveland Clinic where he succumbed to his injuries. He leaves behind a loving wife and two children.

Police Officer Shane H. Bartek | End of Watch: 12/31/2021

Police Officer Shane Bartek, a dedicated member of the Cleveland Division of Police for 1-1/2 years, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. He was shot and killed while bravely intervening during an attempted carjacking in the 4300 block of Rock River Drive. Officer Bartek courageously confronted the suspect, but was shot twice during the struggle. The perpetrator was later apprehended and convicted of multiple charges, including murder and aggravated robbery. Officer Bartek leaves behind his mother, brother, sister, and grandmother.
